Musings

Hello everyone! I had a few things to share with you today. Have y'all ever tried those "ready to cook" flour tortillas at the store? They are just raw tortillas that you cook in your skillet for about 30 seconds on each side. Life changing, y'all! They taste just like the kind you get at a restaurant. We'll never go back to those "off the shelf" tortillas. :) Here's a pic of the fajitas we made recently with the ready to cook tortillas...

I shared the above pic on Instagram (@texasdecor) and apparently I'm not the only one who thinks they're great. :) I bought these at my local HEB, but I've seen other brands at Walmart, etc. They're usually in the same section with the refrigerated crescent rolls.

On a recent shopping trip, I got this Capri Sun Super V free. It was one of those "buy this, get that free" promotions. Anyway, I brought it home to see if my boys would like it and they did! I like to think it's a little bit healthier than regular juice boxes because it has vegetable juice in it along with 3 grams of fiber per pouch. Everyone thinks it tastes just like regular punch, but I like that it has a little extra nutrition. We like the fruit punch flavor, but it also comes in apple and berry.

I got the ol' teepee out for Holly again the other day. She LOVES that thing! She'll hang out in there all day long. Lol! Can you see her? So glad I kept it after my kids outgrew it. :)

In other news, I'm thinking of getting this pedometer from Walmart...

I really want to make sure I'm walking 10,000 steps a day. I know the Fitbit is all the rage right now, but Meemaw here doesn't want to pay that much for one and the main thing is that I CAN'T STAND for something to be on my wrist constantly. :) I really just want to know how many steps I'm taking. I don't need something to sync up to my iPhone and tell me all kinds of other stuff. At least now right now. Of course, I've been known to change my mind, so I might spring for a more expensive one in the future, but for now, I'm thinking this basic model will do.

I know I could get a pedometer app for my phone, but I don't want to have to keep my phone in my pocket all day long either. Do y'all have a pedometer or a Fitbit? What do you like or not like about it?

I know I've shared my EASY CROCKPOT POTATO SOUP RECIPE before, but sometimes I actually make "real" potato soup. The worst part of making real potato soup, to me, is peeling all those potatoes, but now I just use my apple peeler to do the job. I just remove the coring blade. It peels one potato in about 5 seconds.

So much easier!

Well, I've been at it again. I spent a long time the other day switching things up on my kitchen buffet. I can't seem to leave this thing alone lately. :)

I had to share this pic because I went all "fancy" with my coffee the other day. :) I made homemade froth and added chocolate shavings.

homemade coffee froth

To make homemade froth, just put milk (2% or less works best, the lower the fat content, the better) in a container with a lid (I put about 2-3 tablespoons in a mason jar and be sure to leave room for the milk to expand when it heats) and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. Then remove the lid and microwave for 30 seconds and that's it! Just scoop the froth on top of your coffee with a spoon. I also chopped up some semi sweet chocolate chips for mine. Yum!

Hope y'all have a great day!

  2. I just know that we could be friends because:

    a) Meemaw doesn't want to pay that much and neither do I. A regular pedometer works great!
    b) Coffee with froth.
    c) Potato soup
    d) You love your cat enough to give her a teepee.

    Must go find those tortillas.

I have not tried those tortillas before but I will look for them.
    Fun teepee!

  6. Your potato soup recipe sounds delish, and that is such a clever idea to use the apple peeler. I've got the FitBit Flex and Hubby just got one, too. I don't mind the wrist-thing and neither does he, even though he hasn't worn a watch in a good ten years. We just never had good luck with pedometers, but I hope you do.

  7. Our daughter gave my hubby a similar pedometer for Christmas and he loves its! It tells how far he's walked and how many calories he's burned that day. I have a potato soup recipe and I use small Yukon gold potatoes and don't peel them at all! Just cut them into small chunks. Haven't seen those tortillas, but will be on the look for them. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you so much for letting me know about the pedometer! Sometimes I think those little, inexpensive ones can do just as good a job with counting steps, etc. I think I'll try it out before I go the more expensive route with a Fitbit. Thanks again for your input! :)

  8. Lisa, the potato soup recipe sounds sooo good, specially with the weather we are having this week. I just have to get some of those tortillas. I didn't even know they existed. What a great way to have fresh tortillas every time.I don't know much about pedometers, but I think it would bother me also to have it on my wrist all day. I would probably be worrying I get paint on it, or hot glue! LOL I am sure the one from Walmart will work fine. I love the pictures of Holly. Sooo cute! :)

  10. I learned some new things from you today! We've always bought those flour tortillas where the bread is sold. I will have to tell my husband about these in the refrigerator section. We love Mexican food and like to make fajitas every now and then. I also never thought about peeling a potato with one of those devices. Good idea! I also never knew you could make homemade milk froth the way you do it. Thanks for all the great tips!

  11. Great bunch of ideas today! How clever is that apple peeler for potatoes! I love you put up the teepee for Holly. My cats would love that; I bring in a random cardboard box from the garage for them; small to big sizes. Holly is a lucky cute kitty.

    1. Thank you, Mary! I'm all about making things easier in the kitchen. :) Holly loves cardboard boxes too. It's like a little play house for her. Lol!

  13. Lisa...thank you for the froth idea...anything to jazz up my coffee since I gave up the French Vanilla devil in a cup! And I'll look for the tortillas. We use them for Mexican food and wraps. My mom made mashed potatoes every night it seemed and she taught me to peel apples and potatoes like a champ. I had an apple peeler and it was not so great, but I love that you are so innovative.

Hubby has a Fitbit and he wears a little device on his waistband that records everything to his phone which he doesn't have to carry. I have a pedometer that has worked fine until today. I was at 6000 steps after a busy day at 4:00 and after I checked it, it seemed to "clear" I saw it a bit later at 700 steps and I was SO mad!!! Going to try again tomorrow and if it screws up I'll be back to Target for yours!!!

  15. Every now and then we cut our tortillas in fours and fry them. They are so good with salsa. Thanks for sharing how you make the froth!!

  16. I have to try those tortillas! Have you ever seen how long the shelf ones stay good for? Like when I forget about them in the pantry and 3 months later theyre still not moldy? I looove wraps and am excited to try these! Also, thanks for sharing that pedometer! I totally don't want to spend the money on a fitbit either but would love to track my distance! Would it be good for walking/running too? That's a great deal! Thanks for sharing, Lisa! I always love these posts! Oh, and I love your fancy drink!! :)

    1. I think the shelf ones I buy are only good for about a week? We have a lot of humidity here though, so maybe that's why ours go bad so quickly. Yep, that pedometer would work perfectly for walking and running. I'm excited about tracking my steps. :)
